Crendon Timber Engineering’s Dorchester branch recently underwent a transformative upgrade with the installation of the Mark 1 Easyjig Press, the latest in a series of MiTek machinery invested in by the company.

The state-of-the-art technology, known for its ability to streamline manufacturing and boost production capacity, is part of Crendon’s long-term strategy to focus on automation and futureproof its operations.

The installation of the Mark 1 Easyjig Press required significant adjustments to the factory layout. Ed Kirk, Operations, Innovation and Sustainability Director, Crendon, explained that this reconfiguration was no small feat: “We extended the facility to accommodate the new press, relocated existing presses and restructured the crane systems. It was a comprehensive overhaul, but one that has positioned us for greater efficiency and scalability.”

As well as installing the new machine, MiTek reviewed and optimised the layout of Crendon’s manufacturing operations. Dave Thomas, Commercial leader, EMEA Automation at MiTek said “it’s a service that enables customers to maximise efficiency and output”.

The Mark 1 Easyjig Press has already begun to show its value. Over the last three years, Crendon has installed six MiTek presses. The benefits of the Mark 1 Easyjig are particularly evident in speed, accuracy, and user-friendly operation, which collectively enhance production capacity and aid the workforce.

Ed Kirk says: “Automation is critical to our business. It reduces set-up times and increases output, allowing us to produce more trusses in less time. This is a forward-thinking investment in our workforce and technology.”

The environmental advantages are also noteworthy. Because automation streamlines processes, that means reduction in material waste and improved energy efficiency. Advanced features such as lasers assist in accurate positioning of timbers and plates, and these play a pivotal role in ensuring quality and consistency.

While the Mark 1 Easyjig Press has only been operational for six months, feedback has been promising. “It’s still early days but we now have the ability to see a marked increase in production capacity,” says Ed.

Transitioning to the new system required a learning curve for staff but training programmes facilitated by MiTek ensured a smooth adaptation. “Change is always a challenge, but the benefits of the new press have been evident as our team becomes used to the new functionality,” Ed Kirk added.

The partnership between Crendon and MiTek has been instrumental in driving innovation and operational success. MiTek provided critical support throughout the installation process, including technical guidance, software integration, and training for staff. Ed Kirk emphasises the collaborative nature of the relationship: “Working with MiTek has always been a close partnership with management, engineering and design departments and it is mutually beneficial.”

Crendon’s investment in the latest Mark 1 Easyjig Press highlights a commitment to maintaining its competitive edge in the timber engineering sector. The coming years will reveal the full impact of this advanced automation system, but for now, Crendon is laying the groundwork for a sustainable and productive future.
